Abilities
A deep Expertise in ship hydrodynamics includes:
Resistance and powering
Seakeeping
Safety and capsizing, including sailing yachts and high speed vessels
Behaviour in following seas, including broaching, capsizing and deck diving
Manoeuvring (surface ships and submarines)
Ship operations in restricted waters, such as channels, and ports, including channel design, tug operations, ship squat etc
Hydrodynamics of high speed craft
Ship generated waves, and their effect on the environment

Computational fluid dynamics
Experience and Achievements
Conducted a number of peer reviews, and expert witness cases. These have included:
Safety of high speed craft in a seaway
Performance of high speed craft against design specifications
Safety of sailing yachts
Capsizing and safety of fishing vessels
Sinking of a cruise ship
Channel design and operation in restricted waters
Patent issues related to ship design
Independent design assessments
Established the Ship Hydrodynamics Centre, at The Australian Maritime College (AMC - now part of the University of Tasmania) and became the inaugural Director of this in 1986.
Led AMC in its successful application, together with five other Universities, DSTO, and about 20 private companies, for a Federally funded Co-operative Research Centre in 1992. This conducted its work at four main research nodes across Australia. Ran this centre for a year.
Became Head of Department of Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering at AMC in 1997.
Moved back to the UK to become Technical Manager, Hydrodynamics, for DERA in 2001. This was privatised to become QinetiQ, and held various positions cumulating as Technical Manager and Deputy General Manager for the Maritime Platforms and Equipment Group, and Deputy Technical Director for the Sea Division, until leaving QinetiQ in February 2007.
